"We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back."
- Malala Yousafzai, United Nations Messenger of Peace
Our involvement at the UN headquarters in New York also gives us an opportunity to meet and learn from other NGO's and UN agencies - allowing us to stay on track with the latest updates in the development landscape and make strategic decisions about our grant-making.
VGIF is a proud member of these UN groups:
- The Working Group on Girls: A coalition of over 80 national and international NGO's with representation at the UN dedicated to promoting the rights of girls so that they can reach their full potential.
- CoNGO: The Conference of NGO's in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations works to connect empowered and committed NGO's that fully participate with the UN in decision-making and programs leading to a better world.
- NGO CSW NY: The NGO Committee on the Status of Women, NY supports the work of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and UN Women. The NGO CSW/NY advocates for gender architecture reform at the UN, women’s rights and the advancement of women and girls worldwide. In its work with the NGO Committees on the Status of Women in Geneva and Vienna, the NGO CSW/NY supports the Beijing Platform for Action, UN Security Resolution 1325, the Millennium Development Goals and CEDAW.
Women around the world
The women VGIF funds live in communities you may never have heard of. They sometimes don't have a platform to express themselves within their own neighborhoods, let alone on the world stage.
At VGIF, we don't see ourselves solely as a funder, but as a megaphone for the experiences and wisdom of our grantees.
Our consultative status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council, has allowed us to add our grantees stories to the global dialogue - engaging with world leaders, inspirational activists and big-picture thinkers on the issues affecting women everywhere.
VGIF Internship program
One of the primary ways we are able to engage with the UN is through our internship program.
Each year, the VGIF team is joined by several talented interns who are passionate about women's empowerment.
We typically select students in college and masters programs or recent graduates based in New York City.
VGIF interns are given a United Nations pass and encouraged to attend panels and discussions that interest them and align with VGIF's mission.
To learn more about the internship program or apply, please email email@example.com.
Commission on the Status of Women
CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Each year, VGIF sends a group of delegates from across the country to represent our organization at CSW's two-week session.
In session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and other UN entities discuss emerging issues affecting gender equality and agree on further actions to accelerate progress.
If you are interested in participating as a VGIF delegate, contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org.
